Why should exercise be something we dread, a chore we submit to fit in with what we think is expected of us. Its a cycle. You hear about a great new “fat blasting/HIIT/whatever it may be” workout. You try it because there are tons of people talking about how it helped them lose weight or tone-up. You go, you hate it, but you keep going until you are completely burned out, or when the “results” don’t present as you thought they would. You feel guilt once you cancel the membership. You stop exercising and feel shame surrounding that as well. Then you see another ad and your right back at the beginning again.

Why does it seem like there is only one correct way to be working out? As if one way to move your body is superior to all the others? Here’s a thought: what if you stopped listening to what everyone else is doing and start listening to your own body instead?

It sounds really easy. But we all know the saying easier said than done. When starting a journey with exercise the key to sticking to a new program is to actually enjoy the activities you are doing. WHAT? Enjoy exercise, but isn’t the point of exercise to feel like you’re burning in hell?

I’d say that is exactly the opposite of the point of exercise. Unlearning old habits and attitudes is some seriously hard work. But, if you’re ready to actually enjoy exercise here are a few keys to learn to love movement and exercise:

Delete accounts on social media that make you feel lesser

The first step is cleansing out some of the influences on your current relationship with fitness. If you following accounts that make you say “I wish I looked like her/him” or “I should be doing what they do” it might be time to hit unfollow. Clear your feed of what blocks you from trusting your own body and ability to exercise.

Find an environment where you feel safe exercising

Drop the expectation that you need to go to a gym or fancy studio to get into shape. It’s not worth it if the environment makes you feel uncomfortable or unworthy of being there. You can exercise anywhere, even more so now than ever. Home, the park, or on the trail. It doesn’t matter so long as its a place your feel welcome. Ideally if the environment also increases motivation, you are golden.

Choose movement that doesn’t feel like a chore

Try out a bunch of activities to see what you enjoy. If there is a specific instructor or exercise modality that you particularly love, do it. Also, a reminder that you don’t need to be sore after every workout. If high-intensity isn’t for you, then find something that does. If you’re looking for some places to start, check out local studios, try some YouTube videos, or research some online fitness programs.

Give yourself some grace

Its okay to not want to workout, to skip you exercise plans in favor or drinks with friends. Breaks are good, trying new things is hard and nobody is perfect, why would your exercise routine be? Take the breaks you need and move on without judgement of yourself. You don’t need to be at the gym all day everyday in order to reach your goals!

The main point here is basically exercise how you want to and when you want to. You know yourself better than any one else. Find what brings you joy and is something you actually can and want to stick to. Happy moving friends!
